4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days (imdb) (Romania). I would bet on this film getting shortlisted for next year’s foreign-language Oscar (it is Romania’s official submission). It seems that every year there is a Romanian film receiving a great deal of international hype. I had mixed feelings about The Death of Mister Lăzărescu and I felt 12:08 East of Bucharest was a total dud, but 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days is excellent. It’s already won three awards at Cannes including the Palme d’Or. Ostensibly a simple story about a university student securing an illegal abortion, the film explores all sorts of themes; in particular loyalty and trust among friends. The film uses long takes, which I often find boring but here the technique contributed to the film’s intensity and suspense. You want to look away but cannot. I did find it odd that two plot points never got resolved (see below).

The plot points which I think were left open were (1) the knife and (2) the man’s ID card.
